3 things you need to know about Yandex search Yandex, the most popular search engine in Russia, is similar to Google in a lot of ways as many of its services are in essence the same as Google’s. But there are a number of things you need to know about Yandex before you become visible in its search results. Here's a few:
1. Yandex prefers
Russian sites 2. Yandex takes
geographical regions into account 3. Yandex values
links more than content Consequently, the search results on Yandex and Google vary dramatically. Here’s an example (only two websites showed up on the first page of both Google and Yandex search results): Searching for ‘buy kindle’ on Google ![]()
Searching for ‘buy kindle’ on Yandex ![]() So if you want to optimize your site for Yandex – you have a lot of work ahead of you (check this Russian-language source for more info). To make it even more tricky, both Google and Yandex keep working on their algorithms, and companies need to be aware of any changes because they might affect their position in the search results. I’ll keep you posted on the topic in my future atricles. Comment |

I do not agree that Yandex values links more than content, and with Google it's the other way around. When it comes to Google.ru, it is much easier to rank a site with poor content by pushing links to it.. Yandex has much better understanding of Russian language, grammar and semantics.

Thank you for your comment, Anna. I have gathered this info from multiple online sources, which reported that among other things that Yandex pays a lot of attention to links - at least more than Google. I haven't looked specifically at the differences betweet the results on Google.ru and Yandex.ru for search queries in Russian

Yandex is a lengthy bot on my website. I am grateful, even though it takes up a lot of bandwidth. Yandex likes websites in Greece. Perhaps its the lengthy political connection and that Russia has a growing influence in the Greek economy through investments there. More Russians understand English than let on. That is why perhaps Yandex is heavily spidering some sites.

I would not agree either that for Yandex links play more important role than the content. Both are immportant!
