Google in competition with Yandex: taking over Mail.ru

Yandex has the biggest market share in Russia. Their market share is good for almost 55%. Google follows at almost 35% but is likely to make a big step towards Yandex. According to Quintura Google will be taking over Mail.ru and with that taking another 8% market share to move closer to Yandex.

Yandex is the current default search provider on Mail.ru. It has been so since 2006. Before that it was Google who powered Mail.ru.

Mail.ru used to be a lot bigger in Russia (almost 40% market share) before Yandex took over from Google in 2006. Now Google steps back in and Mail.ru hopes to get more market share back. Mail.ru will be powered by Google, but for the user it will look like Mail.ru, not Google.

For Google the interesting part lies in two different angles: with Mail.ru they increase their market share, but more importantly will be able to get even more understanding of the Russian market and language. One of the reasons why Google doesn't seem to be able to beat Yandex is because of the language problems they face in Russia. Another angle for Google is the advertising part. They will be getting a lot more advertising profit from Mail.ru.

  • Not sure if this is just a partnership/deal or an acquisition.

Nonetheless an interesting move in a European market where Google isn't dominant.
