Yandex goes to Kazakhstan
Mon 26 October 2009 11:01, Editors
Yandex is Russia's biggest search engine and can be seen as the "Google of Eastern Europe". However, they are not yet present in all Eastern European countries. That's why Yandex decided to take steps abroad. This month they announced the step to Kazakhstan.
Yandex.kz will be a Yandex portal focussing on Kazakh users. In that portal Yandex has a challenge to overwin. Since Kazakh do not just speak Russian, but also Kazakh. Search yandex.kz will therefore take into account the morphology of the Kazakh and Russian languages.
Yandex will also be showing local sites when local requests are being made. If for example you look for the president in Russia you will find Medvedev, but in Kazakhstan Nursultan Nazarbayev will be the top result.
Yandex also made some more changes to get the Kazhak users interested. You can for example create mailboxes on the yonder.kz-domain, get detailed maps on Yandex.map from Kazakh areas and get schedules of local trains and airplanes.
Yandex also hasn't forgotten how to make money. Kazakh advertisers can access all the Yandex.Direct tools and can put in ads in both the Russian and Kazakh language and pay in both rubles and teenage.
Alexander Laryanovsky, director of the regional development of Yandex is happy with the choice Yandex made:
"We want to cooperate with Kazakhstan's Internet companies and site owners, and together with them to make the Internet attractive to users"
Malware detection Meanwhile Yandex also added a feature for all their services which is similar to the tool Google launched in Webmastercentral. The tool for malware detection an warnings will review sites for malware periodically and advise webmasters to be careful and how to solve the problem.
