Yahoo Portal in UK shifts to Google Search

It's a remarkable move that Yahoo has made in the UK. Instead of using their new partners in crime Bing, the online portal for BT Broadband, which is run by Yahoo, replaced its Yahoo web search engine by that of Google.

The BT Broadband portal BT Yahoo is a co-branded initiative by Yahoo and BT which provides several Yahoo services to BT Broadband users. Those services will remain being handed to the BT-users, including search. That search engine however will now be Google.

The move is a remarkable one in light of the deal between Yahoo and Microsoft earlier this year. It should therefore be seen in the light of Yahoo's partner in crime here, BT.

BT is the biggest broadband provider in the UK with a 35% market share. This makes it important for BT to be backed up by another big player, in this case Google. With the move of replacing Yahoo's search engine by Googles BT is hoping it will increase the usage of the BT Yahoo service. With the big market share Google has in the UK BT thus targets the big numbers. Bing in this case is just too small.

For Google this deal is also interesting. The deal makes Google the largest search provider of ISPs in the UK. Still, Microsoft must have a strange feeling when they hear about this...
