Ads showing in Yahoo IM Yahoo has been very active in the last couple of months. Most of the news related to Yahoo was negative. They 'fired' their CEO, fired another 1500 employees last week, closed offices in Northern Europe and seemed to be phishing for a Microsoft take over. On the other hand Yahoo was active in adding some new features and trying to gain the trust from (potential) users. Now yet another feature appeared which is supposed to help keep Yahoo increase their profits. Yahoo is testing ads in their IM application. Users will only see an ad once a day. It will scroll away when the conversation gets longer. Yahoo is not scanning the conversation or e-mail of the users to supply more relevant ads, such as Google is doing. "Ads in Yahoo Messenger will allow us to put even more resources behind developing and delivering valuable free features and services," Yahoo stated "Yahoo Messenger is a free service to our users, and our goal is to provide a useful and relevant experience while ensuring this is a profitable business for Yahoo. Yahoo is inherently an advertising-driven business." ![]() Yahoo has been testing this feature since August and will continue to do so until the end of the year. It is not yet clear what will happen with it in the new year, but very likely Yahoo will roll it out. The feature might increase add-revenues for Yahoo. With that Yahoo might be more interesting for potential buyers. Comment |
