Twitter originally started as a side project in March of 2006. Now it’s a huge real-time short messaging service that works over multiple networks and devices. There's no denieing it: It’s a really powerful platform. If you are part of it and know the game you can also use it for online marketing and SMO.

In march 2009 three German guys started to analyse the German Twittersphere. Thomas Pfeiffer, Webevangelist and the moderator of the Xing Microblogging group #xmbg asked 2.800 German twitter users how, where and why they are using Twitter. The researchers found that most German Twitter users are men and that women mostly choose an alia

Remarkable in the analysis is that the twittering Germans are young (in average 32 years), man (74%) and high-educated (78%). Two of three have an own blog and write about technical related stuff, web 2.0 related topics or private things. 50% of all asked Twitter users are working in the media- or marketing sector also 25% are executive staff or entrepreneur.

Most of the German Twitter users (83%) are only writing in German. I think this reflects what I have heard a thousands of times about Germans myself: Germans are to lazy to speak and learn other languages.

Sometimes this is also my perception mainly if I look at the older generation. I twitter in 3 languages, German, English and Dutch. Sometimes it’s chaos J

In the analysis also is concluded that women often chose an alias and do not use their real name. The reason could be that women are twittering more personal information than men. This will mean that they want to protect their updates better.

Also remarkable is that German Twitter users have more followers than people they are following. But only 23% of the respondents find the amount of followers of their profile important.
