Instagram Introduces Photos of You
Just announced yesterday, Instagram is now offering pretty much the same tagging function as Facebook. The Facebook owned photosharing app launched its photo tagging function, “Photos of You” in its iOS and Android apps. With this feature, you will no longer have to take photos of yourself to appear on your own Instagram profile. Now, all the photos you are tagged in will show up in your profile.
According to CNN, Instagram users will be able to privately test out the Photos of You feature until May 16th, at which point the photos will be visible to others. For Instagram, the goal of this function is to make it easier to share and discover photos. Before Photos of You, the only way to find out whether a photo of you was uploaded to Instagram was to sort through your activity feed, hoping someone had mentioned your username in a caption. Additionally, there was no easy way to share a photo someone uploaded of you to your own followers. Unfortunately, according to an Instagram spokesperson @mentions will not be automatically converted into photo tags. To add tags to old photos, you will have to do it manually. To get access to the feature, upgrade to version 3.5 of Instagram in Apple's App Store or on Google Play.
So how will the feature work? When you upload a photo to Instagram, you will be asked whether you want to tag the photo. You can tap a person’s face and add their Instagram username. You can even tag a photo with a restaurant or venue’s Instagram handle. You will receive notification similar to Facebook when you have been tagged in a photo and the photo will appear in the new Photos of You tab. Also, similar to Facebook, you will be able to remove tags of yourself and turn on a setting so people will need your approval prior to tagging you. Lastly, you cannot tag other people’s photos, only your own. With this new function, it is hoped that people will spend more time using the app. According to comScore, the average user spends 4 hours a month on the platform.
I think this Photos of You function is a great addition for Instagram. Most people are already familiar with it because of Facebook and people enjoy tagging themselves and friends in photos. I also think that people will end up spending more time on the platform since they will be tagging people. What are your thoughts on this new function?
