Vkontakte iPhone app competition

Vkontakte, the biggest social network in Russia, announced a competition for developers to create an iPhone messenger for Vkontakte. The winners will split the prize of 5 million rubles (around €130,000). The competition starts today and will go on until April 20th.

Vkontakte defined strict guidelines (link for Vkontakte users) for the new app: it has to be a light version of VKontakte suitable for sending messages, pictures and videos stripped of many other functions. They even provided the visual interface for most of the pages.

The new application will not be the first app for Vkontakte – a few of them have been available for some time and offer a variety of functions. According to Vkontakte press secretary Vladislav Tsypukhin, the idea behind the current competition is to design the simplified official app which Vkontakte users would prefer to third party alternatives, so that their messages would go only through Vkontakte network.
