Facetones–integration of Facebook photo with your ringtones

Nowadays, people keep in touch by using social networks more than phone calls and increasingly see their devices as portals to social media sites. Vringo has sensed this trend. Its CEO John Medved says: “phone calls almost feel out of date because there is no social context”.

Vringo is a provider of software platforms for mobile social and mobile video services, and has launched many interesting apps which integrate phone calls with social media. One of the most popular apps from Vringo must be Facetones with 500,000 users at this moment, and more users are expected to follow rapidly. It plays slideshows of friends’ most recent Facebook photos when they call you or you call them. However, this app can only be applied on Android devices at this moment. From their home page, it says the iOS version will be coming soon.

Facetones automatically matches your Facebook friends’ names with the names of your contacts. In this case, matching up the names that are saved differently on your phone than on Facebook is a problem.

Talking about Vringo mobile marketing strategy, it chose to cooperate with mobile carriers. It has established good relationships with top carriers in Japan, the US and Latin America. These carriers will offer an ad-free version of the service for around $1/month. Of course this version also can be downloaded from Android market for $4.99.

Right now, many mobile carriers’ bottom lines suffer from messaging and voice apps such as Skype that bypass their main revenue streams of phone calls and SMS.
