New agreement with Facebook could be turning point for Bing

End of last week Facebook renegotiated its agreement with Microsoft. One of the consequences is that Facebook will take care of its own display ad business but the biggest news for us of course is the enhanced cooperation between Facebook and Microsoft on search.

As Microsoft writes on its Bing blog both companies "have deepened their joint work together on web search to provide even more compelling experiences to Facebook users with Bing".

Both companies will provide, I quote, "Facebook users with a more complete search experience by providing full access to great Bing features beyond a set of links, including richer answers combined with tools that help customers make faster, smarter decisions".

However, the most important news is that Facebook and Microsoft/Bing are extending their cooperation outside the US.

And this is very good news for Bing. Facebook is growing fast outside the US and with the extended cooperation, Bing now reaches a total more than 400 million people using Facebook around the world.

I guess I don’t have to tell you that Bing still has a lot of catching up to do. According to comScore, Google sites still account for two-thirds of 131 billion searches worldwide.

If you know that, also according to comScore, Facebook is the largest social network, you see what the impact of the deal might be for the eternal “trying to catch up with Google game” Microsoft has been playing for too many years now.
