Will bloggers have to pay for YouTube-videos?

A very controversial plan has been launched in the Netherlands. Buma/Stemra, the Dutch copyright organisation who looks after the royalties for artists published new rules regarding the embedding of videos containing music.

The rules, who fare supposed to effect in 2010, state that anyone has to pay the copyright organization when they put a video containing music on their website. This includes embedded video's from YouTube.

The copyrights-organization intends to charge big time for the videos. Six embedded videos are worth 130 euros, 30 are worth €650. Considering that most videos are embedded by bloggers without any money and networking sites like Hyves, this will have a big impact on the Dutch blogosphere.

The rules were supposed to be for commercial sites only, but the pdf which Buma/Stemra published shows everybody has to pay. That means even bloggers who have a very small amount of traffic have to pay.

Buma/Stemra will be sending the owners of a website a letter when embedded videos containing music are found. The website owners will be urged to by a license for the videos or remove the videos.

The copyright organization will not only be charging Dutch bloggers. Every blogger with an own domain can expect a letter from Buma/Stemra.

The Dutch internet community responded with anger and disbelieve. A petition has been started to prevent the measures. And probably the last word hasn't been said about this.
