Fri 7 August 2009 14:31, Bas van den Beld
The Google Online Marketing Challenge has come to a finish. In this contest undergraduate and graduate students battled to become the most effective team in optimizing, managing and updating a Google AdWords campaign. 2,187 student teams from 57 countries around the world took part in this global online marketing competition
The 2009 Winners are Australians from the Deakin University. In the final round there were four European teams present, two from Germany, one from Poland and one from Italy. The Polish team won the Regional Award. A German team of the FH Wuerzburg University came in second. In a special SEO Roadshow interview we talked to the three members of this team. The podcast can be downloaded below.

About the German team Daniel Unger, Axel Scheuering and Axel Zimmermann-Pfeiffer, coached by Prof. Mario Fischer came in second after the Polish team with their e-commerce website cinemore-shop.de, an online shop for movie merchandising products, aluminum boxes and BluRay® videos.
The team was provided a 200 dollar budget from Google and had to increase the revenue within three weeks. They succeeded: sales saw an increase of more than 330 per cent.
For their strategy they used only Google products: "The students drew up specific campaigns for the Content Network and the Search Network. For the Content Campaigns they relied mainly on Placement Targeting. In order to achieve low-priced clicks, a Long-Tail strategy was developed; fifty-thousand keywords were generated, which ensured an adequate search volume. Over the three-week competition the smart students from Wuerzburg even managed to crack the target of one million Impressions." the press release states.
With their succesfull campaign and their trofee at hand they are aiming for business success. The three young students have started their own internet marketing company, Online Profis. Let's hope these guys aresuccesfull, the next generation after all can take the business to the next level.
