Link Consolidation is the new Pagerank Sculpting? A while ago we reported on the pagerank sculpting bombshell that Matt Cutts dropped at SMX Advanced. Some time has passed and the SEO world has been brewing solutions for this change in pagerank flow. One idea put forward by Rand Fishkin from SEOmoz is link consolidation. Link consolidation basically means combining several pages of content in one single page, using anchor links to organise it internally. For example you can combine your About Us, Terms and Conditions, Privacy and Legal statements in one About page. The result is that you have only one link on all your webpages instead of four pointing to these different topics. It decreases the impact of lost pagerank significantly. Your users can still get to that content easily, but you won't be losing as much link juice anymore. This is an elegant solution which requires little effort to implement. You won't need to use JavaScript or Flash to mask links (and risk usability issues for people who have those disabled) nor do you have to resort to black-hat cloaking techniques and risk a penalty. Having said that, it might be that the pagerank sculpting debate is blown a bit out of proportion. The 'new' way of handling nofollows has been in place for a while already without anyone knowing about it, but also without significantly impacting SEO practices. Link consolidation seems to be a logical and reasonable way of avoiding nofollow tags and retaining link juice, but only time will tell if it's a valid long term strategy. Comment |

I really don't believe this has an good result and I'm not really happy with this way of optimizing, since it almost cuts back the user experience...
