Top 20 SEO quotes from SMX London

Fri 22 May 2009 16:46, Eduard Blacquière

As a SearchCowboys reader, you must have been under a rock to not know the Search Marketing Expo (SMX) London took place this week. There has been coverage on the blog here (and more to come next week) and a lot of live coverage at the SearchCowboys Twitter account.

I thought I'd highlight the top 20 SEO quotes I heard during SMX London, giving you a short but useful summary with take-aways of this quality event:

Top 20 SEO quotes from SMX London

1. Websites don't link to other websites. People point to other people's work.
(Lyndon Antcliff, Cornwall SEO)

2. If you want links, not traffic, Twitter is pretty much useless.
(Patrick Altoft, Branded3)

3. You have about 2.7 seconds to reach a linker.
(Lyndon Antcliff, Cornwall SEO)

4. It doesn't matter if a link is paid for or not. Important is if the end product looks like a paid link or not.
(Patrick Altoft, Branded3)

5. Alexa data is slightly better than random guessing.
(Rand Fishkin, SEOmoz)

6. For most brand (authority) sites with some good rankings, it only a needs a couple of good anchor text links to get good rankings. If you are not a brand, you need to look natural.
(Patrick Altoft, Branded3)

7. Search engines can automatically determine if a link is in a footer or sidebar and devaluate those.
(Rand Fishkin, SEOmoz)

8. Wrong settings in a robots.txt could delay Google search indexing on your website
(Luisella Mazza, Google)

9. If somebody links to you, show some gratitude (for example put it on twitter, stumble upon etc.)
(Patrick Altoft, Branded3)

10. When you have little links per page, a sitewide internal link can get a new page ranking quickly.
(Rand Fishkin, SEOmoz)

11. Treat your email subject, twitter post, etc if it were a headline.
(Lyndon Antcliff, Cornwall SEO)

12. Crawling is not a guarantee you're indexed.
(Rand Fishkin, SEOmoz)

13. Don't worry too much about duplicate content.
(Luisella Mazza, Google)

14. Places to sculpt with nofollow: register/login, my account, shopping cart, terms of service, privacy, legal notice, anything disallowed by robots.txt.
(Rand Fishkin, SEOmoz)

15. Places not to sculpt nofollow: about page, editorial external links, categories & subcategories, product/detail pages.
(Rand Fishkin, SEOmoz)

16. Search marketing only has a 1.5% mindshare of the average Fortune 500 CMO.
(Brian Featherstonhaugh, Ogilvy) (also see the pre-event SearchCowboys interview with Brian)

17. Does an affiliate marketing program cause a traffic drop? No, but pure affiliate sites are unlikely to rank.
(Luisella Mazza, Google)

18. Will hacking websites work? Yes... reason for telling this: it can happen to you.
(Mikkel deMib Svendsen, deMib.com)

19. We don't bother with digg anymore, it's too much of hit and miss. We make a personal promotion network
(Patrick Altoft, Branded3)

20. A 12 year old has a better performance dashboard than an 40 year old CMO (referring to world of warcraft)
(Brian Featherstonhaugh, Ogilvy)

  • Hi Eduard!

I wasn't able to attend the SMX this year, but I'll hopefully be back next year.

By the way - you've got some very interesting topics here at SearchCowboys and I'm sure you will find some of the topics in my blog relevant too.

I've got about 11 years of professional SEO experience and have a very mixed certification list. You may see this list at http://www.ExposeIT.no/about/ which is a personal presentation of me and what I do :-)

Perhaps we could have a lunch at the SMX at London next year?

    Best regards,
    Trond :-)
