A browser is... Dutch don't know better...A couple of months ago a test was done with New Yorkers to find out if they knew what a webbrowser was. You might have seen it or not. The video is posted below. Apparently the New Yorkers thought Google was their browser. Funny huh? Then again, are we Europeans that much better? A group of Dutch tried to find out in Rotterdam what the Dutch knew about a browser... Check out the second video. Turn on subtitles by turning on the Closed Captions (hover over the right-most button on the toolbar at the bottom of the video and when the menu pops up, click the bottom one that says CC).So is this 'stupidity' by those being questioned or is this just another proof of the big 'gap' there is between 'us early adopters' on the web and the rest of the world? When I ask this question to my mother I'm sure she will be equally ignorant and unable to provide an even remotely accurate answer.
Yet she has been using the internet actively and successfully for the better part of 5 years.
As internet professionals, the jargon of the industry is so embedded in our minds that we simply can't see beyond it. But we need to realize that the jargon really isn't important. It's probably the least important aspect.
What people do with these things we call 'web browsers' and 'search engines', and how they do it, is what really matters.
