We are all waiting for the break through of semantic search. A search engine which completely understands what we are looking for.

Semantic search however turns out to be more difficult than expected and we are still not there. Then again, there are a lot of search engines out there who do give it a shot. And they're not all doing a bad job.

Search Engine Journal made an wrap up of nine of the top semantic search engines around. They took a look at:

Hakia
Kosmix
Exalead
Sensebot
Cognition Search
Lexxe
Swoogle
Factbites
Powerset

All worth taking a look at (Beware though, Swoogle.com is not the search engine!). With trying out all nine of them you will not only have your day filled, you will learn a lot more about semantic search.

Not all of them have the same quality, but taking a look at these nine search engines does show us we are on the right track. But how long will it take before we actually have a mainstream Semantic Search Engine?

Hakia is actually quite good, but I still believe that the biggest semantic web search engines will be Google and Yahoo!
