Remember the other search engines?

On the internet entire forums are dedicated to old tv-shows or old movies. 'Remember MASH? Remember the Avengers?". Soon we might have forums remembering the 'other' search engines that once were.

Do you 'remember' Lycos? Or Altavista? That could be topics in such a forum when things are going the way they are now in Europe. Dutch Search Marketing Firm Checkit recently showed that in Holland people are forgetting about the 'other' search engines. Brand awareness seems to become a problem for the smaller search engines.

For the 14th time already Checkit presented the results of their National Search Engine Monitor. This research is the result of interviews with 1049 respondents about search engines.

It was no surprise that Google was the most used and most famous search engine in Holland. However, what was remarkable is that people seem to be forgetting about the others. Not only is the use decreasing, also the awareness off the others is decreasing.

Even search engines like Yahoo and Live are becoming less familiar with those in Holland using the internet. 67% percent of the respondents said they knew Yahoo while only 29% had heared of Live. The local search engines like Vinden.nl and Ilse.nl lose not only users but also brand awareness.
