UK adults want to buy online, but businesses aren't ready

53% of British online adults say that they are now conducting more transactions online than they did in the past. They say its due to the current economic climate. The ability to compare products is said to be the main reason for  74% of the researched Brits.

The numbers come from a research conducted by Harris Interactive and commissioned by Tealea. The research shows that business are not responding well to the fact that more people are willing to buy online. They could be leaving a potential £11.2bn (about 11.9 bn euros) of revenue.

The researched show a couple of other interesting results:

  • 77% of online consumers have experienced website issues in the last year
  • 46% of those would then abandon a transaction entirely or switch to a competitor
  • 74% of all British online adults said negative comments online influence likelihood to do business with a company

The research also looked at social media. The results show that social media is getting more important to consumers. They are more and more sharing their experiences. 13% of online adults who encountered problems conducting online transactions said they shared those experiences on a blog or social networking site. They however also noted that direct contact with companies declined, even though some of them posted complaints on the companies website.

The research is interesting to read because it shows there is a lot to be won when it comes to online sales and conversion.
