YouTube brings you the local news

In an attempt to finally get a big profit YouTube is trying to be more like it's owners, Google. And without many people actually noticing it, they are becoming a Google for Video. The only big difference: YouTube doesn't crawl the web. Since this spring there is a new feature on YouTube which makes YouTube an even bigger source for content: News near you.

News near you shows local news videos which are located close by to your location. You can set your own location so if you would like to 'move' virtually that is possible.

With the local news YouTube says it wants to support TV stations and other partners by creating a new source of revenue. However, as the New York Times points out, news media aren't making profit using YouTube at this time. The new feature will probably be filled with 'local reporters' so another form of civic journalism.

YouTube launched the service this spring and began with inviting 25.000 news sources which are listed in Google News to become suppliers. Amongst these suppliers were for example AP and Reuters. It so far hasn't really gone into the high numbers, but there are some video's which did have some value. Some Iran-citizens for example posted videos of the protests. They were shown on the news near you section. However, if you wanted to notice them you should have set your location to Iran, which blocked many sites at that time...

To start using this features, just add the feature in the Add / Remove Modules section. It actually looks very good with a map an markers you can move and all.
