Schmidt resigns from Apple Board

It was always kind of a dubious role Google's CEO Eric Schmidt was in. For years he was part of both the Google board as the Apple board. Today Apple announced that Schmidt is now longer a part of the Apple Board.

According to Steve Jobs Schmidt is resigning because Google has begun to "enter more of Apple's core business, with Android and now Chrome OS.". In other words: Schmidt has become the competitor and should stay out of the boardroom. This move makes Google and Apple from friend to rival.

“Eric has been an excellent Board member for Apple, investing his valuable time, talent, passion and wisdom to help make Apple successful,” Steve Jobs said in the press release. “Unfortunately, as Google enters more of Apple’s core businesses, with Android and now Chrome OS, Eric’s effectiveness as an Apple Board member will be significantly diminished, since he will have to recuse himself from even larger portions of our meetings due to potential conflicts of interest. Therefore, we have mutually decided that now is the right time for Eric to resign his position on Apple’s Board.”

The rumours of Schmidt's position being in danger began popping up recently after Google announced their Google Crhome OS. When an iPhone app from Google was rejected by Apple it even looked like both companies might go to war. With the resigning of Schmidt Google and Apple now officially have become rivals. Who wail win or lose the future will tell.
