Twitter search starts crawling & ranking

It's a very interesting discussion: is Twitter a search engine or not? On Twitter itself people are discussing the subject and Any Atkins Kruger is talking about this subject on the International Social Media Summit on May 14th in London and without a doubt it will be a subject on SMX London.

Twitter search only searches within its own site, so judging by that Twitter itself is not a searchengine. Twitter search however might be one. And if the changes that Twitter's new VP of Operations, Santosh Jayaram confirmed on Tiecon2009 are really being made Twitter is one step closer to being a 'real' search engine.

Jayaram, a former VP of Search Quality for Google, told the audience and moderator, News.com’s Rafe Needleman, that Twitter Search will start crawling the links placed in tweets and begin to index the content of those pages.

And not only that, Twitter will also be implementing a ranking system. Twitter will be taking into account the the reputation of the tweeters and make rankings based on that. The exact calculation on which the rankings will be based aren't clear yet. According to Jayaram engineers are still working on that.

These are definitly steps which will make Twitter a 'real' search engine. When the changes are implemented (Jayaram didn't say when) Twitter might be a player in the search market to keep a close look at. They do have one advantage to all the other search engines so far: the real time search.
