Turkey developing own Internet search engine

Turkey's telecommunications watchdog announced this Saturday its developing a specific Turkey search engine which is supposed to launch in 2010.

The telecommunications watchdog believes foreign search engines like Google can't meet Turkey's needs. They are also afraid of security problems coming from the foreign search engines.

Tayfun Acarer, chairman of Turkey's Information Technologies and Communications Authority Board said:

"I believe that our search engine will be popular in Turkic and Muslim countries and I am confident that these countries will trust our search engine,"

Turkey recently challenged Google to pay taxes in the country because Google actually had an office in Turkey. The Turks now might challenge Google on another level, that of the search engine usage.
