6 billion online videos watched in Germany in August

German music right holders might not like the idea that YouTube, and thus Google, is presenting lots of videos containing music. The allegations about copyright infringement however do not seem to affect the use. Comscore calculated that in August alone 35,7 million German users watched at least one video online.

In Germany a total 6 billion videos were shown. That is 38 percent more than in the same month last year. Most of these videos (43%) was looked at at a Google site.

Google is growing rapidly. It saw an increase of 38% videos watched in August 2009 compared to August 2008. The biggest growth however was for specific German sites like ProsiebensSat1, which saw an increase of 164%), Axel Springer (a growth of 222%) and Deutsche Telekom, which grew no less than 495%. If you look at the absolute numbers however these sites play a minor role.

In August the users on average watched 16 hours of online content. Most of these users were men in the age between 15 and 24, who all watched an average of 24 hours of online content.

YouTube was the biggest winner with 2,7 billion videos shown to 24 million users. That makes an average of 115 videos per user. What is surprising is that women over 55 watched more videos on YouTube (an average of 105 videos) than men in the same age group (75 videos). An average video length was 5,3 minutes.
