Liverpool beach ball goal makes internet move

The English Premier League this week was dominated by one single curious event. A goal scored by Sunderland's Darren Bent in the match against Liverpool was not only the deciding goal of the game, it was one of the most curious goals ever. The ball deflected against a beach ball.

The goal (see below for a video) was on everybody's mind in the last couple of days. And the internet immediately reacted. YouTube movies were made, tweets were sent and not surprisingly searches were made. Hitwise calculated that UK beach ball-related internet searches had shot up this weekend.

There were over 193 variations on the term ‘beach ball’ typed in the UK search engines this weekend. 155 of them were directly related to the Sunderland goal.

"The top recipient of traffic from the term ‘liverpool beach ball’ was Goal.com, but there are also reports of a sudden increase in demand for beach balls from Man Utd fans ahead of next Sunday’s Liverpool vs. Manchester United match." says Hitwise.

It's a great example of how the news affects that what people are doing on the web. There were even some smart affiliates selling beach balls who came to action.
