Facebook to launch its own smartphone Facebook appears to be working on its own smartphone, The New York Times reported on Monday. The social network recently hired engineers with experience working on Apple’s iPhone and iPad. The rumor about the Facebook phone started last year with a series of articles on the blog AllThingsD. Referring to a project codenamed ‘Buffy’, the blog pointed out that the social network had been working together with Taiwanese cell phone maker HTC in order to produce a truly social, Facebook-integrated device. So far, however, the most significant Facebook novelty we’ve seen in HTC phones is a dedicated button on the front panel (in the pic above). The button makes it easier to access Facebook and share all kinds of content with friends, but it doesn’t seem to be enough to call the device The Facebook phone. Quoted by multiple sources, an unnamed Facebook employee said that Mark Zuckerberg ‘is worried that if he doesn't create a mobile phone in the near future Facebook will simply become an app on other mobile platforms’. So what should we expect of The Facebook Phone? Tell us in the comments what you think! Meanwhile, enjoy the good old video picturing the evolution of the cell phone up to 2007 – a lot has changed since then!
