Microsoft closing Soapbox

This weekend Bing decided to start a "Bing wants your Jingle" contest on YouTube. Yes, on YouTube, the video-sharing website of its biggest competitor. It was one of the hints towards what was coming: the closing of Soapbox, Microsofts very own video-sharing website.

In an e-mail Microsoft Vice President and MSN leader Erik Jorgensen said: "We have decided to shut down the Soapbox feature. Beginning today, July 21, we will be notifying both our customers and our internal and external partners that on July 29th, people will no longer be able to upload videos to Soapbox and on August 31st, the service will no longer be available."

Soapbox closing is a sign that Microsoft maybe doesn't see how it could be winning the competition with YouTube, however it may be less 'severe' than that. Soapbox only accounted for 5 percent of MSN Video streams. And Microsoft will continue to support that service. With 88 million unique users each month that service does have a future.

Meanwhile Bing is using YouTube for its promotional services. In a video they are asking users to submit a jingle about Bing on YouTube. The winner can earn a $500 (352 euros) American Express gift card.
