BBC takes on Bing Maps big time

We know that a lot of websites use Google Maps to make applications or mashups. Bing has got a maps-service which by many is considered even better than Google Maps.

The BBC must be one of those. They implemented no less than eleven map applications, varying from a Cannes 2009 Map to Wimbledon 2009 and an Irish Language Map.

BBC takes on Bing Maps big time

All the maps are embedded in the BBC websites. During any of the events the maps are updated throughout the events.Some maps, like the 2009's Cannes Film Festival Map also uses embedded video, audio, pictures and text.

All eleven maps:

Save Our Sounds – send in recordings of sounds from where you live and listen to the sounds.

Cannes 2009 Map - explore 2009's Cannes Film Festival in video, audio, pictures and text.

G20 Summit Map - explore 2009's London G20 summit in video, audio, pictures and text. 

Olympic and Paralympic Heroes Parade - the Heroes Parade for Olympians and Paralympians, taking place in London on Thursday, 16 October 2008.

Wimbledon 2009 - Photos, video, audio and text updates of Wimbledon 2009.

Berkshire Floods - An overview of the Berkshire floods in February 2009 with photos, video and audio reports from correspondents and listeners.

British and Irish Lions - 2009 tour of South Africa - the 2009 Lions tour of South Africa in video, audio, pictures and text.

Irish Language Map – Turn on layers of Irish decent including family name, features, Flickr photos, map photos, events and place names.

England Council Elections 2009 - follow BBC coverage of the run up to June's English council elections.

India Election Train - follow the reports of BBC correspondents as they travelled by train around India to cover the country's elections.

  • Yes I like Bing's maps better than Google maps too, especially for creating custom maps as the BBC has done. Good stuff. Google, are you paying attention?

  • Is there a way to have an embed map of bing using the bird's eye view but zoomed out? The default zoom is too close and can't really show the whole neighborhood.
