Google lets you subscribe to Danny Sullivan's favorites

Wed 26 August 2009 14:00, Bas van den Beld

Ever wondered what the 'big names' in the industry are reading? And would you like to read what they are reading? Well, Google is now giving you this opportunity, well kind of.

Google Reader has added an option in which you can subscribe to handpicked reading lists from their "featured Power Readers" using Google Reader. So now you can read what Danny Sullivan tells you to read.

Google lets you subscribe to Danny Sullivan's favorites

If the 'power users' are actual literally 'power users' is doubtfull, its more like they are well known users. And it's not as if you 'following' their shared results, the blogs and websites they suggest are hand picked by them.

Still, its very interesting to see what some of the 'famous names' suggest. Google has four categories in which suggestions are made: News, Tech and web, Food and health and Trends and fashion. In the "Tech and web"- section Danny Sullivan is the power user when it comes to search. He is accompanied by big names like Chris Anderson (Wired), Adam Pash (Lifehacker), Mark Frauenfelder (Boing Boing), Alex Papadimoulis (The Daily WTF), Jason Kottke (Kottke.org) and Annalee Newitz (science/scifi blog io9.com).

In other sections we can find people like Arianna Huffington (Editor-in-Chief, The Huffington Post), Abby Gardner (Editor, Fashionista) and no less than eight New York Times columnists.

As for the suggested links: yes there are some beauties to be found, but not surprisingly every 'power user' starts off by suggesting his or her own site. So another interesting thing is: how can we get on that list? ;)

  • Google apparently assumes we are all interested in these American prominents? Where is the rest of the world? The only 'foreigner' I could find was a french poweruser in the food category...

  • Hi Remco, thanks for adding that I wanted to add a line like that in the post, but eventually forgot. It's really US focussed, you're absolutely right about that.

Hmm seems to be Google-wide: GMail, Reader, Keyword Tools, News Timeline, Search, My Account, all confirmed down for me.
