Google 'authority'-update in the UK

It took Google a couple of months to get it across the ocean, but today we are starting to see the results of a Google algorithm change which will help authoritative sites, and with that brands rank better popping up in the UK.

Google changed their algorithm in the US in March. With the change Google favoures authority and trusted websites. Google doesn't call it favouring 'brands' themselves, but it will definitely help brands rank better.

To be a 'authoritative site' according to Google you don't have to be a brand like Coca Cola. If you are an authority in a niche market you can benefit as well.

The change will make it a lot easier for authoritative sites to rank. A website which has high authority but not as many links as another site can now still outrank a site with a lot of links. This will also mean that the search results might be dominated more by 'brands'.

Back in March Matt Cutts explained what went on in the video shown below.

  • Any idea if the changes have rolled out in The Netherlands as well?
I see one of my sites dropped beginning of June, but at the same time I had some server response time problems, which could have been the reason for the drop.

  • Dennis, it looks like something is happening, but so far I'm not sure if this is the reason for it. But Google is changing things (more on that later)

@peteyoung I guess they're referring to Google.co.uk, excluding (or not knowing about) UK searches using the .com engine
