Is Google starting to take Europe more seriously? Google is the biggest search engine in Europe by far. And they really don't have to put much effort in that. Still Google believes the European market is a very interesting one, and not just for search. Google is therefore giving Europe more attention so it seems. Last week they appointed the company’s director of marketing for the UK, Ireland and Benelux Dan Cobley as director of marketing Europe. At the same time former head of EMEA marketing Lorraine Twohill was promoted to Google’s global marketing vice president. Cobley's promoting means he will be taking on the marketing responsibility for country geographies which include the Nordics and Germany. Before Cobley was marketing director of Ask Jeeves and Capital One’s vice president of brand and marketing. ![]() Giving Europe 'their own' director of marketing might be a sign Europe is becoming more interesting for Google. However, half (100) of the total marketing and sales staff (200) is US based, so we have a long way to go. Comment |

I think Google already is taking Europe pretty serious. Especially compared to Yahoo and Microsoft.
Yahoo closed a lot of their European offices already and Microsoft always releases things that are broken in Europe.
For example this week they launched Bing. All new fancy features are only available when you set all settings to US. And they invited me for a private beta of MS Vine. They worked almost 5 years on that tool, but when you open the "important places" map and go to Europe, the tool litteraly freezes.
