Google Pagerank update on new year's eve Google must have thought it wanted to give some website-owners the chance on a 'fresh start' in 2009. Just before the end of the year, Google did a toolbar Pagerank update. The update will no doubt mean a lot of website-owners will have a lot to talk about. Pagerank has been discussed about a lot in the last couple of years. Some website-owners are focussing completely on it, but the importance of Pagerank has decreased a lot in this decade. But still there is no consensus about the importance of it. Though Google has 'devaluated' it, it can still be very usefull for some websites. Only a couple of months ago Michael Gray wrote about how Pagerank sculpting can be worth the effort and Ann Smarty did a short post on it getting a lot of attention with it. Pagerank will probably always be a 'hot topic'. Google blogsearch shows over 2000 results on this topic only in the last DAY... Also forums keep on discussing the importance of Pagerank. It would be nice if there would be consensus about the importance of Pagerank, but that will probably never happen. And well, it keeps us blogging ;). ![]() We are curious to find out what you are thinking, therefore our poll is now all about Pagerank. Is it bullshit or not? You tell us! CommentRelated tweets

PageRank is only a nice little indicator of what is the real important data for your website: the quality of your backlink profile.
And its nice to see if your linkbuilding activities pay off, but seeing online revenue rising should be the real success-meter ;-)

Offcourse it's no bullshit. Since Google is still providing this data, it means that there is a certain value linked to PageRank. I even think that PageRank itself hasn't changed that much over the past years, but that other elements increased in value significantly. The influence of social media for instance is becoming more and more important, but since we don't know how to "quantify" it yet, people still want to stick to the "old" and "trusted" PageRank
