Roads of Russia
Google joined efforts with Auto.ru to create Roads of Russia, a project meant to track the quality of roads throughout the country. From now on, Russian drivers can use Roads of Russia free Android app and the related website to view a map with numerous potholes, cracks and bumps marked in red.
To begin with, let’s admit that Russian roads are far from perfect. Actually, Russians even have an old proverb which reads ‘Russia has two woes: fools and roads’, and while the first one is a question of philosophy, the latter is a practical problem which greatly slows down the traffic throughout the country. The new service is supposed to help drivers navigate their way around damaged roads. The mobile app automatically gathers data while you are driving (mainly, where you are and to what extent your car is shaking), which is then translated into colors on the map, green showing the best and red the worst quality of the road. ![]() The map of Moscow roads looks pretty good so far, with most streets in green, but it will probably get more yellow and red as more people install the app. We’ll see… ![]() Comment |

Russian classical writer Gogol said that there are two curses in Russia: fools and roads. I live in Ukraine, neighbouring to Russia, and for me the pictures you show is not a wonder.

There is another great project aimed to point out specific road defects, for further consideration by the road services: www.rosyama.ru. People upload photos of the potholes, and by this they create a database of bad roads in Russia.
