#RepublikTwitter, Indonesian Twitter Love Story
Some of you might probably have forgotten that today is Valentine’s Day, until you read people’s overflowing emotions about “the lovely day” on Facebook or Twitter this morning. Yuck!
Ah well, talking about Valentine, today I have a special Valentine’s tale from the country where I grew up, Indonesia. The tale is called “#RepublikTwitter” and it goes like this..
Once upon a time, there was a fun, clever, and confident guy, called “Sukmo”. His positive energy shone through all his tweets, which made it easier for him to get in touch with many ladies on Twitter, including a glamorous, pretty woman called Hanum. After months of chats on Twitter, they finally decided to meet! Sukmo’s confidence totally vanished when he saw the beautiful Hanum for the first time in real life. Will Hanum see the smart and fun guy in Sukmo, as what he usually shows on Twitter?
#RepublikTwitter is actually an upcoming Indonesian movie which will premiere this week in Indonesia. This romantic comedy is loosely inspired by Indonesians’ behavior on Twitter in general; a nation’s collective love affair with social networking sites. As I quoted from The Next Web’s interview with Aulia Masna, the content developer of Indonesian tech site, Daily Social, “Most Indonesians use Twitter as a conversation platform regardless of what Jack Dorsey wants it to be. We are a very chatty bunch. Dorsey says it is an information network? Try telling that to the hundreds of thousands of Indonesians who chat on Twitter every day. The movie itself tries to capture the larger picture of what is going on across the local Twitterverse.”
The name #RepublikTwitter I guess is taken from the fact that Indonesia has the third largest Twitter market in the world! Actually, Facebook is dominating the country even more, with more than 40.8 million Indonesian Facebook users; putting Indonesia as the second biggest Facebook users in the world! So, back to Valentine, what is your plan for today? Any social media hook up? Naah, keep the story to yourself, or just share it to your followers on Twitter!
