SEO basics taught by Google

If you think about it, what would be the best source for advice on optimizing a website? The source closest to the search engine who decides it all, one would say. And who is closer to the search engine than the search engine itself?

Google has decided it had enough off starting SEO’s always asking them what to do and decided to set up a document with all the basics of SEO.

The 22 pages counting pdf was written by the Webmaster Help Group. They “thought it'd be useful to create a compact guide that lists some best practices that teams within Google and external webmasters alike can follow that could improve their sites' crawlability and indexing.”.

The document covers all the basic SEO parts. Google talks about:

Titles
The description meta tag
Url structure
Site navigation
Anchor texts
Tags usage
Images
Robots.txt
No Follow
Promoting your website
Google actually gives “Content tips”, how to create content which is well readable for search engines

It also sends traffic to their own webmaster tools by advising SEO’s to use them.
All in all it’s a nice document (download here) for those who are starting with SEO or to give away to clients to get them to look at the basics.
