Get them while they're shopping

When are online advertising messages most effective? When will surfers click them? If we only knew... Well now we do. Internet Advertising Bureau (IAB) UK together with Lightspeed Research performed a survey to find out when internet users believed they were most receptive to advertisements.

The results weren't very shocking: consumers think they will most likely respond to ads when they are researching and shopping. Though this is not a very surprising result, the research does give us some more insights.... read more

GMail down: Google is letting us know they are in charge

Big troubles in internet paradise today when during the morning the Google Mail service GMail went down. Twitter was overloaded with people complaining or asking question about the status of GMail.

Within a very short time it became clear that most internet marketeers and search marketeers rely on GMail for their day to day jobs. And that when Google goes down, they go down.

Google is supposed to be a search engine. But with all the 'extra's' they are serving you can hardly think of them as 'just a search engine' anymore. One of their 'extra's' however seemed to have found something interesting. And as you know searching leads to finding. Google Earth supposedly found the lost city of Atlantis.

It was buzzing all week last week about the 'discovery' on Google Earth. Markings in the ocean on the west coast of Africa showed a pattern which could indicate there once was a city there. But the buzz is gone now, Google officially told us we had not seen Atlantis, nor aliens.... read more

Brits are afraid of... cats?

Brits are afraid of flying and cats. That is, if you believe that searches are an indication of what people are  thinking and doing. Numbers provided by Hitwise show that the most searched for fear in the UK was ‘fear of flying’.

For the 12 weeks ending 14/02/09, UK Internet users searched for over 8,500 distinct terms containing the phrase ‘fear of’. Flying and cats are the most searched for 'fears' in that period.... read more

Remember the other search engines?

On the internet entire forums are dedicated to old tv-shows or old movies. 'Remember MASH? Remember the Avengers?". Soon we might have forums remembering the 'other' search engines that once were.

Do you 'remember' Lycos? Or Altavista? That could be topics in such a forum when things are going the way they are now in Europe. Dutch Search Marketing Firm Checkit recently showed that in Holland people are forgetting about the 'other' search engines. Brand awareness seems to become a problem for the smaller search engines.... read more
